#6 Oklahoma Sooners: I have been very impressed with the Sooners thus far into the season. Brent Venables has struggled the past couple of years and that was due to the offensive struggles. Now, they have picked up Washington State transfer John Mateer and he is competing at a high level and has put himself in the conversation for the Heisman trophy. Oklahoma has one of the toughest schedules in the country but, if they continue to play elite defense and Mateer can continue to play as well as he has, they will have a great chance at the playoffs. I believe the Sooners can withstand two losses and still be a shoe-in for a playoff spot. The Sooners received some bad news as Mateer underwent hand surgery but, no matter what the media tells you. He will be playing in the Red River Rivalry.
#7 Penn State Nittany Lions: Many people have Penn State a lot higher up in their rankings but I just don’t see it. They were able to get most of their top players from last season to return for another year. So far, things have looked lackluster and sloppy. Drew Allar was rated one of the top returning quarterbacks in the country and has looked underwhelming. Not to say that he won’t be able to turn it around, but against inferior opponents he has not played well. Also, when was the last time James Franklin has been able to beat a top 10 conference opponent? Franklin is 4-20 against top ten teams and hasn’t been able to beat a in conference opponent since 2016 when they won the Big 10 championship. This week he welcomes the Oregon Ducks on home field and has a chance to break that streak. I just don’t see it happening!
#10 Indiana Hoosiers: The Hoosiers have just proved that last year was not a fluke. Fernando Mendoza is another guy that can put himself in the conversation for the Heisman. After losing Kurtis Rourke last season many believed that Mendoza wouldn't be able to play to the same level. He just proved everyone wrong and Curt Cignetti keeps finding the right guys for his program. Cignetti is a very vocal guy, he expresses whatever comes to his mind. You can only do this when you have a huge belief in your team. I believe the Hoosiers have a chance to win the big 10 and go to the playoffs for a consecutive year. It has been remarkable how Cignetti has turned this program around quickly.
