Philadelphia Flyers vs Carolina Hurricanes
The Eastern Conference favorites, the Carolina Hurricanes, didn’t miss a step in their opening-round series against the Senators, sweeping them in dominant fashion. Their ability to roll all four lines whilst getting contributions coming from every part of the lineup was a difference maker. Every year, depth separates good teams from true contenders in the playoffs and the Hurricanes have clearly found theirs. Their young core set the tone, with the Blake–Stankoven–Hall trio emerging as the most productive line of the series. That balance is an encouraging sign for Carolina, showing they don’t have to rely solely on their top stars to carry the load as the competition intensifies.
Meanwhile, the Flyers enter the postseason from the opposite end of the spectrum, embracing the underdog mindset. Philadelphia has flashed signs of Stanley Cup potential, but consistency will be the key if they hope to pull off an upset. Like Carolina, the Flyers have benefited from strong contributions from their young core, and they’ll need that momentum to carry over into this series. Goaltending is often the difference-maker in the playoffs, and Dan Vladar was outstanding in the first round against the Penguins. He’ll need to stay sharp and deliver another high-level performance to give Philadelphia a legitimate chance to compete.
Prediction: The Carolina Hurricanes are shaping up to be a team no one wants to face. Their man-to-man system makes it extremely difficult for opponents to generate quality scoring chances, as they apply constant pressure and limit time and space. For the Philadelphia Flyers to have any chance in this series, they’ll need to rely on speed and physicality to try to break down Carolina’s defensive structure. That said, this is a tough challenge for a young and inexperienced Flyers team. Over the course of a full series, Carolina’s discipline and consistency should give them the edge. In the end, the Hurricanes look poised to advance to the Conference Finals for the second straight season.

Montreal Canadiens vs Buffalo Sabres
The Buffalo Sabres have answered the bell and have shown that they can win a playoff series. The Boston Bruins may have been one of the most feared matchups for this Sabre team and they handled it with poise and were able to finish them off in just six games. People across the world were tuned into this series as the Sabres have waited a long time for playoff hockey. The Buffalo Sabres were built with the playoffs in mind, constructing their roster from the back end forward. Throughout their rebuild, they prioritized defensemen with their first-round picks, a strategy that paid clear dividends in this series. Their defensive structure was composed, consistent, and impactful from start to finish. If they want to make a deeper run, they’ll need to carry that same level of play into the second round, fueled by the energy of their passionate fanbase.
On the other side, the Montreal Canadiens faced what was arguably the toughest first-round test in the playoffs against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Despite their youth, this Canadiens group showed resilience and composure in high-pressure moments, never backing down from the challenge. While Montreal is known for having one of the strongest home-ice advantages in hockey, their ability to secure three wins on the road ultimately defined the series. A major factor in that success was rookie goaltender Jakub Dobes, who delivered a standout performance. He not only held his own but outplayed one of the premier goaltenders of the era, giving his team a chance to win every night. If the Canadiens are going to make a deep run, their depth will need to continue stepping up. The foundation is there, now it’s about sustaining that level of play against even tougher competition.
Prediction: This series will have the best atmospheres the sport has ever seen. Both teams will have major home-ice advantages as both fanbases have been itching for playoff hockey. The Montreal Canadiens have a more experienced roster but the young Sabres will have something to prove. This series is going to be a total toss up but, it's going to come down to goaltending and Dobes is playing lights out right now.

Anaheim Ducks vs Las Vegas Golden Knights
The Las Vegas Golden Knights needed a couple of games to figure out the Mammoth but they eventually got the job done. The Ducks will be a similar opponent for them as they both are fast teams. They will need to roll all four lines and play with physicality. They’re goaltending in Carter Hart looked promising the last couple of games but will need to continue as the Ducks can score at will.
The Anaheim Ducks pulled off a major first-round upset, knocking out the Edmonton Oilers in impressive fashion. Now, the key is sticking to the same blueprint heading into the second round. Anaheim thrives in an up-tempo, high-scoring style, which plays directly into the strengths of their speed and young talent across the lineup. The addition of veteran presence has also made a noticeable difference, giving the Ducks a steadier leadership core to complement their emerging stars. However, one area that needs improvement is their starts, conceding the first goal in five of six games against Edmonton is a risky trend. Playing from behind consistently is difficult in the playoffs, where controlling the pace with a lead significantly increases the chances of winning.
Prediction: The Anaheim Ducks have established a clear blueprint for success in this series, but the Vegas Golden Knights will certainly look to learn from the mistakes made by Edmonton. Vegas understands that this matchup represents one of the more favorable paths they’ve had to a conference final in some time, especially with several previously rebuilding teams now emerging as legitimate playoff threats. It may take the Knights a few games to adjust to the high tempo offensive attack of the Ducks but they will eventually shut them down and win the series. The Ducks will be a tough out in the next couple of years but I can't see Vegas wasting this opportunity.

Minnesota Wild vs Colorado Avalanche
The Colorado Avalanche handled the Los Angeles Kings quickly, but the series may have come at a cost. Los Angeles’ low-event, defensive style occasionally slowed Colorado’s offense and limited their usual transition game. Even in control, the Avalanche had stretches where scoring chances were harder to generate against the Kings’ structure. They advance comfortably, but the bigger question is whether that slower series affected their offensive rhythm heading forward. If they are able to find their offensive game throughout the entirety of their lineup they will be a tough out. They certainly have the “deepest” lineup of any team in the playoffs but they will have to use everyone against the Wild.
The Minnesota Wild shocked many by taking down the Dallas Stars in just six games, controlling large stretches of the series on both ends of the ice. Their momentum is carrying into the second round, where confidence will be a major factor. Injuries remain a concern, especially with key players unavailable, but a healthier lineup would make them significantly more dangerous. One of their biggest strengths so far has been the energy of their fourth line, which plays a physical, disruptive style that targets opposing top lines and throws off rhythm. Against the Colorado Avalanche, goaltending will be critical. If Minnesota’s netminder can keep Colorado to around three goals per game, the Wild will give themselves a strong chance to stay competitive in the series.
Prediction: This matchup could end up being the most-watched series of the second round, with two true powerhouses going head-to-head in a battle that feels destined to go the distance. At this stage of the playoffs, it often comes down to star power—whichever team’s top players can consistently tilt the ice and deliver in key moments will likely decide the outcome. The Minnesota Wild may also have an edge in terms of adversity faced, as they’ve already been tested heavily this postseason. That experience could prove valuable in a long, physical series, especially against a team with equal firepower.
